  4. Memento Mori: A Signet Ring in Memory of My Lovely Dad

Bespoke Rebus hand engraved memento mori signet ring in 18ct yellow gold and enamel

When his father passed away in 2019, Rebus founder Emmet Smith, set about designing an everyday signet ring to wear in his memory.

Emmet, who already owns another signet engraved with the Latin ‘Memento Vivere’ or ‘Remember to Live’, is no stranger to the historic tradition of memento mori jewellery. Wanting to create a personalised version of this style in memory of his dear departed Dad, Philip (a.k.a. Dickie, Detsy, the Captain), he set about bringing his bespoke vision to life.

For those looking for an utterly unique piece outside of our core range of customisable jewellery, the

  5. An Idea, An Artwork, A Signet Ring

Personalised Coat of Arms designed for a hand engraved Rebus Signet Ring

Everything begins with an idea, and the same is true of any piece of Rebus jewellery. Sometimes that idea comes to us fully-formed, but more often than not customers require the help of our award-winning team of artists and illustrators to coax it into life.

One such idea came to the Rebus workshop recently; a collection of inspirations one customer wanted represented on a personalised signet ring. Looking for a traditional design that include the initial T, and whose artwork would represent protection, shepherding, defence, and valour, the importance of family, and include a nod to their Greek heritage and Christian faith, our heraldic artist got to work.

  6. ENGRAVING WIMBLEDON

    ENGRAVING WIMBLEDON

Rebus owner Emmet Smith is famous for his role as engraver of the winner’s trophy at the Wimbledon Championships.  It’s an image familiar to tennis fans since he took over the role from the now retired master engraver Roman Zoltowski; cameras cut away to Emmet carving into the trophy nameplates as soon as the men’s and women’s champions are decided.

But it’s not just engraving the trophies.  Rebus also produces commemorative signet rings for Wimbledon players and others involved in the tournament.

Earlier this year we gifted a set of

  7. How To Choose Your Signet Ring Metal

How To Choose Your Signet Ring Metal

Which Precious Metal Should I Choose?

Preference for a certain carat of gold is often based on cultural factors. In the UK, 9ct and 18ct are the most commonly sold, while in the US, 14ct is more popular. 24ct represents pure gold and tends to be used for exchange and investment, as it is too soft to use in jewellery.

Rebus hand craft our signet rings solid yellow, rose or white gold (9ct, 14ct and 18ct), platinum.

Yellow gold is a traditional choice and its appeal as a precious metal dates back to 600 BC, when it was first used in coin form. Pure gold is too soft to make into a ring, so it is always mixed with other alloys (metals).

  8. How to Choose your Signet Ring Shape

How to Choose your Signet Ring Shape

When choosing your signet ring, it’s important to take your time in your selection as it is something you will wear for life and pass down to the next generation. The ‘rules’ of which finger to wear to signet ring on is a much-discussed topic with our customers; opinions differ because the signet ring is an item of jewellery which is so steeped in tradition, yet it’s identity and purpose is ever evolving as fashions change, evident not only over recent years but across the centuries.

Signet rings have a flat bezel (the surface which bares your engraving) and the design is usually engraved in intaglio (meaning it will leave a raised impression of the design if the ring is pressed into sealing wax). As designs vary in size and shape, from ancient heraldic family crests to unique bespoke designs, the most important thing to consider is choosing a face shape that will best display the engraving.

  9. John's Story

    John's Story

A picture tells a thousand words, and through these artistic depictions, we tell the incredible stories that inspire these extra special engravings.

    John’s Story

“Having recently moved back to the UK after years in America where I used to live in New York State, happy times; I wanted to mark that period of my life, so having been recommended Rebus I decided to buy a signet ring.

My girlfriend and I like to hike and the Catskills Mountains were quite close to us. One of mountains in the Catskills is called Balsam Mountain, which is very similar to my surname name and of course that is one of the peaks we decided to climb. It was at the top when the trees finally cleared to reveal an amazing view and I saw eagles which just were so beautiful. I guess it was apt as the neighbouring mountain is called Eagle Mountain, anyway it felt a rare privilege to see them.

I wanted the design to look natural, the rabbit element is

  10. An Alternative Guide to Engraving

    An Alternative Guide to Engraving

Although a family crest or a coat of arms makes for a fine signet ring design, not everyone can call on such things to engrave onto a ring, or if you do come from a family with such a tradition, you may not wish to display it on your hand.  As we have mentioned in our Ultimate Guide, although signet rings were for centuries the mark of a gentleman, they have been around far longer than heraldry has and in contemporary times, as fashion and tastes relax and democratize, people are becoming more creative with what they wear on their fingers.  Here are some ideas:

    The mark of a relationship…

Many customers who come to Rebus to create a signet ring do so for their wedding day. As one of our master engravers discusses in an interview, some of the more interesting jobs he has taken on include the depiction of a relationship (this is no mean feat given the miniature size of
